Benton Harbor sits on the Lake Michigan shore across the St. Joseph River from its twin city, St. Joseph. Historically the industrial engine of southwest Michigan — Whirlpool Corporation was founded here in 1911, and Benton Harbor was the majority employer through the mid-20th century. The city's demographics are a study in the racial-economic geography of America: Benton Harbor is 85% Black, one of the most Black-majority cities in Michigan; St. Joseph, just across the river, is 89% white. The Whirlpool jobs moved out; Benton Harbor bore the collapse.
That racial-economic history is the pastoral context for the abolitionist argument here. Abortion facilities in America disproportionately locate in and serve majority-Black communities; the Black church tradition — Baptist, AME, COGIC — has long held that this pattern is a civil-rights concern. The abolitionist framing that abortion is homicide and Black preborn lives are equally protected under the law extends the historic Black-Baptist opposition to abortion into civil-code terms.
