Taylor is a downriver Detroit suburb — one of the classic postwar working-class cities south of the Rouge River, populated by generations of Ford Motor Company assembly-line families. Politically it swings; culturally it is unabashedly Reagan-Democrat: union households that vote Republican for president and Democrat for local government. Its churches are predominantly Catholic, LCMS Lutheran, and evangelical Baptist.
Downriver Wayne County — Taylor especially — is exactly the kind of place where the abolitionist argument has to be made in plain, working-class terms. The people here have never accepted the pro-choice framework; what they have accepted is the mainstream pro-life strategy of incremental restrictions. The abolitionist case invites them to something further: the recognition that abortion is homicide and must be treated as such.
